A little history from the Public Works Street Department

At the very first Longview City Council meeting held in February of 1924 the City established the Police Department, Fire Department and the Street Cleaning and Lighting Department, recognizing the value in maintaining the health, safety and cleanliness of the City of Longview.

More recently City Council asked "how long has the City swept the streets and picked up the leaves?" at the most recent workshop, held December 7, 2023. The answer: 100 years!

Below is  some interesting history of the Street Departments first purchase in providing services for the citizens of Longview.

grader Here is a picture of a Wehr One Man Motor Grader, the first grader the City purchased in 1926.

At the same time the City also purchased its first sweeper and the tractor to pull it. It was a Whitehead and Kale sweeper and a 1926 Fordson Model F tractor (seen above).
