FAQ: Is my property in City limits?

Answer: The city limits of Longview are shown on the City of Longview GIS Public Mapper under the City Boundary Layer. An easy way to verify jurisdiction is to go to the Cowlitz County Assessor’s website and search for a parcel or address: Check the Tax District line. Only those addresses in tax district 400 Longview are in the city limits.

FAQ: Can I get a new address?

Addresses can be assigned and reassigned by filling out an address request form available at Longview City Hall or by contacting the Community Development Department. All requests will be reviewed and assigned according to the current addressing convention accepted by the city fire department.

FAQ: Can I build an apartment behind my house?

Answer: The opportunity for building a detached apartment on the same lot as an existing residence is possible. This scenario is allowed as an accessory dwelling unit, more commonly known as a mother-in-law apartment. Among several requirements for this type of structure are that the owner resides in either the ADU or the primary residence.

FAQ: Can I build a shop with a bathroom in it?

Answer: A property owner may build a shop/garage on the same lot as an exiting residence with a bathroom. Community Development staff will review all such proposals for conformance with the intent of the zoning ordinance to ensure that unpermitted apartments or bedrooms are not being built without proper code conformance.

FAQ: Can I have a home-based business?

Answer: Home occupations are allowed in the residential zones of Longview as long as the business can conform with the requirements of the City of Longview Home Occupations ordinance LMC 19.22.030. The intent of this code describes a home office situation; however other types of businesses can be approved.

FAQ: Is site plan review and approval required?

Answer: The City of Longview does not have a separate site plan approval process: applicants for a building permit will turn in two complete sets of construction drawings which will be reviewed simultaneously by those concerned departments. Civil/site plan review requires 11 sets of drawings.
