Hydrant Flushing Information

Yellow Hydrant Alongside SidewalkAs part of normal system maintenance, it is necessary to periodically flush a water system by flowing water at a high velocity. Corrosion and low flows in pipelines can reduce water quality in the City’s system, making it necessary to periodically perform system flushing from fire hydrants and other outlets.

Advisory signs will be posted in the flushing areas. Water usage should be restricted during hydrant flushing as sediment from the flushing may be pulled into the home’s plumbing and sprinkler systems. After flushing, it is recommended that residents run water through an outside hose bib or in a bathtub for a short time prior to consuming water or washing clothes.

Schedule

In an effort to notify customers when flushing may affect their area, the City prepares a flushing schedule and corresponding flushing area map (PDF) at the beginning of the year. You may request a copy of the map and the flushing schedule by calling 360-442-5700.
