Pothole Patching

Potholes and other street failures are repaired in order of priority. Our goal is to respond to all requests within 24 hours of being notified. The problem is initially alleviated by installing a temporary patching material. The holes are then prioritized by size and street traffic volume, and scheduled for permanent patching.

Concrete & Asphalt Repairs

Concrete or asphalt street failures are repaired in order of priority. Installing a temporary patching material will alleviate hazardous or emergency repairs. All streets are prioritized and scheduled for permanent repairs.

Chip Sealing

Streets receiving a chip seal are prioritized by size and traffic volume. An asphalt/water mixture is applied to the roadway and covered with washed aggregate, which is rolled as soon as possible. After it has been swept, a new wearing surface will extend the life of the pavement and reduce maintenance costs in the long run.

Alley Grading

The Street Division has one maintenance grader, and it is busy most of the year. Alleys are bladed on a rotating basis. The City's goal is to blade each alley at least five times per year. Rock is added to the alleys as needed. Throughout the year, blading is restricted due to rain (too much water), and/or alleys being too hard (summer months).

Snow Removal & Control

The Street Division has one snow plow. They begin preparing for the snow season in summer by:

  • Getting snow equipment ready
  • Stockpiling supplies
  • Training staff
  • Updating and exercising the City's emergency response procedures

Priority routes and streets adjacent to priority routes will be plowed or sanded first to accommodate fire, medical, and police response as well as transit, school buses and commuter traffic. Once these routes have been cleared of snow and conditions are stable, crews will begin clearing the remaining streets.

Leaf Removal

The Street Division focuses on the need to remove fallen leaves from City-owned trees so that vehicles and pedestrian traffic can move safely throughout the City. Street crews using shovels, pitchforks, loaders and dump trucks load and haul leaves to pre-designated areas for City composting.

Citizens may also request to have leaves delivered to their gardens for composting or anyone may arrange to pick-up leaves directly at the Longview City Shop. Call 360-442-5620 to obtain leaves.

Ordinance

Please note the following ordinance regarding non-City tree leaves and yard trimmings in the right-of-way.

Section 7.12.060, Paragraph (B) of the Longview Municipal Code states:

"It is unlawful for any person to bury or dump waste paper, boxes, leaves, trash, debris, grass, wood and cuttings from trees, lawns, shrubs and gardens upon the street, alley of public place in the city."
