Council members to be sworn in on January 14; mayor and mayor pro tem to be appointed

Incumbent council members Mary Jane Melink and Dennis Weber will take the oath of office again during at the January 14 City Council meeting along with newly-elected council member Chet Makinster.  Mr. Makinster had previously filled an unexpired council term in 2006-07.  The council members will be sworn in after roll call.  Immediately following the swearing-in ceremony, council will elect a mayor and a mayor pro tem from amongst themselves.  In Longview, the office of mayor is a position elected by fellow council members instead of being elected directly by citizens.  The mayor and mayor pro tem positions are both two-year terms.

Water supply project workshop on January 21 at 6 p.m.

The City of Longview is considering moving its drinking water supply from the Cowlitz River to groundwater at the Mint Farm Industrial Park.  This idea has been extensively evaluated, and City staff is confident that an abundant supply of high-quality drinking water can be supplied to the community from this location.  On Thursday, January 21, the public is invited to attend a joint City Council, Cowlitz PUD, and Beacon Hill Sewer District workshop starting at 6 p.m.  The event will be held at the Cowlitz County PUD Auditorium at 961 12th Ave.
